I am trying to verify the PGP signature for some anonymity related software and keep getting this message:

An error occured: MacBinary file can't be translated

What is the meaning of this?

Heh! I guess Boschloon is as clueless about Mac file formats as he is
everything else. No surprises there, he doesn't even know the
difference between DOS and Unix text, tabs and spaces, trailing
whitespace and indentation, etc...

To the OP: Where did the software come from and where are you trying to
check it? Most of the things that will cause this sort of error should
be sorted out automagically.

Maybe you should have just gone with the "??" part.

Not that it would make any difference, here's a bit of free clue for you:

From The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing (27 SEP 03) [foldoc]:

MacBinary

<file format> An eight-bit wide representation of the data and
{resource fork}s of an {Macintosh} file and of relevant
{Finder} information. MacBinary files are recognised as
"special" by several MacIntosh {terminal emulator}s. These
emulators, using {Kermit} or {XMODEM} or any other file
transfer protocol, can separate the incoming file into {fork}s
and appropriately modify the {Desktop} to display {icon}s,
types, creation dates, and the like.

(1995-03-08)

Utilities to extract the data and resource forks exist:

Thomas "The Village Idiot" Boschaloon scores another point
towards being inducted into the village idiot hall of fame.

At this rate he may be the only person in history to be
inducted as a PRACTICING village idiot. ;-)

Macs store files differently than Unix or PC systems. When you
download or move files between platforms they *should* be
translated automatically similarly to the way FTP handles transfers
of text and binary files differently.

What platform are you trying to verify the software on, what form
is the software in, and how did you obtain it?

If you say so.

I can't find any mention of the error message you give in RFC 4880, the
official PGP Inc. forums or the GPG 2.0.8 source code.

Maybe you should just burn the .iso file without checking the signature
on it. It might just work.

If you are verifying a PGP signature there will be a .sig or .asc file
to feed to the PGP program. .bin files are for Apple computers so I
don't see how you could get your error message on Windows. Sometimes
.iso files are also called .bin (but this doesn't seem to be the case
with incognito).

The plan is to burn the iso (with or without checking the pgp
signature). And insert it in the drive of your DVD/CD player and boot.

You must also make sure the computer boots from CD before it does from
the harddrive in your bios setting. Check your motherboard manual to see
how.

Good luck,
Thomas
